Beach time, tram tours, snorkeling and selfie spots combine for memorable vacation experiences

GULF COUNTY, FLORIDA–NOVEMBER 2025–Gulf County, Florida, is known as a destination with a low-rise vibe and fun, welcoming atmosphere. That is what makes it the perfect spot for creating family memories. The most popular attractions here include sparkling sand, clear waters and warm sunshine. That combination makes this Northwest Florida location, just two hours southwest of Tallahassee and an hour east of Panama City Beach, an ideal one for a family getaway, filled with memorable moments.

Gulf County’s lodging choices offer a range of family-friendly accommodations. The variety of vacation rental homes of all sizes includes options large and small, on the beach and off, each with a style and amenities that give it a character all its own. For those who prefer camping, there are plenty of choices offering both primitive spots and full hook-up RV sites.

For visitors who want to skip the grocery shopping and head straight to the fun, Coastal Concierge (515 Fourth Street, Port Saint Joe, Florida 32456; 850-227-5148) and Vacation Prep Squad (850-749-3071) are just a call away. They will do the shopping and stocking and provide any needed rental equipment, from beach chairs and umbrellas to baby furniture and strollers.

Once the perfect home-away-from-home has been found, some folks never want to leave. Whether playing board games on the porch, building sandcastles on the beach or searching for shells along the waterline, some of the best family memories are made while just hanging out along these shores.

When it’s time to explore all that Gulf County has to offer, a great way to get the lay of the land is to embark on a scavenger hunt to find the best selfie spots and document the fun. Of course, the county’s four fun murals are atop the list, as is the Time-Zone Chair (corner of CR 386 and Highway 98), on the spot in St. Joe Beach where the time zone changes.

Port St. Joe is the heart of this destination and at the hub of the downtown waterfront is the iconic Cape San Blas Lighthouse, built more than 130 years ago. Today, visitors can climb to the top of the 98-foot cast iron skeletal tower and visit the Keeper’s Quarters and gift shop. The shops along Port St. Joe’s nearby Reid Avenue are the perfect places to find local specialties and one-of-a-kind souvenirs.

The Forgotten Coast Sea Turtle Center (1001 10th Street, Port St. Joe, Florida 32456) is nearby and is a great place to add a little education to the adventure. Here, visitors learn more about the popular creatures that nest along the coast and the work that is being done to preserve and protect the endangered species.

For those who want to explore beyond downtown, there are numerous bike rental options. A variety of public parks are open for play and there are plenty of beach access points along Gulf County’s 43-mile stretch of shoreline, so families are sure to find the perfect spot with just the amenities they prefer.

One must-do park for both adventure and education is the St. Joseph Bay State Buffer Preserve (3915 State Road #30-A, Port St. Joe, Florida 32456; 850-229-1787). It spans thousands of acres of preserved coastal habitats and has multi-use trails for hiking, biking, birding and more. There are four access points to the trails system and guided tram tours are also available. The preserve’s Visitor Center and Observation Tower offers trail maps, educational exhibits about native plants and animals and information about all kinds of outdoor activities in the area.

There are also protected areas that offer inland and beachfront areas for enjoying a day’s outing. One of Florida’s most popular state parks is located on Cape San Blas. T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park (8899 Cape San Blas Road, Port St. Joe Florida 32456; 850-227-1327) is known for its miles of sandy-white beaches and is popular for fishing, swimming and picnicking. Its day-use area includes beach access, a boat ramp, public restrooms and a covered picnic area. Accessible only by private boat or ferry service (St. Vincent Island Shuttle Services, 690 Indian Pass Road, Port St. Joe, Florida 32456; 850-229-1065), the St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge (850-653-8808) is a protected barrier island which lies just offshore from the mainland. Its miles of natural beaches and inland habitat welcome those who want to truly get away from it all. This is the perfect spot for viewing a variety of shorebirds, raptors, alligators, deer and more, and is popular for hiking, bicycling, kayaking, fishing and nature photography.

For that epic day of adventure, these family activities promise good times and great memories:

Gulf County is the spot for horseback riding on the beach. Broke-A-Toe Horseback Riding (Port St Joe, Florida 32456; 850-899-RIDE), and others, offer trips for a family adventure they will always remember. Even new or novice riders can enjoy this fun beach activity.

Fighting Conch Rentals (850-247-9392) offers gear rentals and guided eco tours making it easy to get out and paddle the bay waters or explore area bike trails, whether on your own or with the guidance of a local expert.

In the inland community of Wewahitchka, Off the Map Expeditions (482 Gary Rowell Road, Wewahitchka, Florida 32465; 850-819-3053) offers adventures on the waters of the Dead Lakes. Fishing, paddling, birding and eco tours are all opportunities to explore these amazing waters. Nearby, the famous local Tupelo Honey is processed and sold by local beekeepers like Smiley Honey (161 Bozeman Circle, Wewahitchka, Florida 32465; 850-639-5672). This local delicacy is celebrated with its own festival each spring.

And for those looking for a little help in planning that perfect getaway, Visit Gulf County offers an online concierge service which shares insider secrets and local tips. After answering a few questions, a concierge can recommend the best options for a most memorable family experience. Upon arrival, the staff at the Gulf County Welcome Center (150 Captain Fred’s Place, Port St. Joe, Florida 32456; 850-229-7800) is also available for suggestions.

Where to eat

The dining options range from enjoying a family meal “at home” with provisions from Scallop Cove (4310 Cape San Blas Road, Port St. Joe, Florida 32456; 850-227-1573) or Duren’s Piggly Wiggly (125 West Highway 98, Port St. Joe, Florida 32456; 850-229-8398) to dining out at one of the many fine restaurants in the area. From seafood, to burgers to pizza, there is sure to be a menu that fits the family vibe.

The extensive menu at Shipwreck Raw Bar (7008 West Highway 98, Port St. Joe, Florida 32456; 850-647-5050) is a family favorite for breakfast, lunch and dinner in a comfortable, fun atmosphere.

Diners can enjoy grouper bites, Krazyfish Tacos and more, inside or al fresco at Krazyfish Grille (113 Monument Avenue, Port St. Joe, Florida 32456).

Featuring more than 20 regional breweries and a variety of unique brews, this event highlights Georgia’s vibrant craft beer culture against the backdrop of Americus’ rich glassblowing history. Whether you’re a beer enthusiast, an art lover, or simply curious, this unforgettable festival showcases Americus as a true artisan destination.

First Fridays

Check out what makes downtown Americus wonderful during every First Friday of the month when a stroll through downtown means enjoying its many businesses, boutiques and restaurants. Some months have themes, such as Artsapalooza, Multicultural May, and Downtown Beach Party & Luau. In August, for instance, it’s “Downtown Goes Disney” with Disney-theme characters visiting the shops. Many times, you’ll find free activities to enjoy, including tours of downtown by trolley.

Kids get creative!

Children of many ages can let their creative passions fly at Art Hive Studio. Located in downtown Americus, the company features camps, classes, art parties and more. Art Hive offers both weeks-long classes and drop-in events.

Lenny’s Farmers Market

Every Saturday from May through November, you’ll discover a host of fresh Georgia produce and meats at Lenny’s Farmers Market at 110 N. Hampton St. The market is named for Leonard “Lenny” J. Waitsman, a downtown business owner and Americus City Council member who started the market. Look for locally produced items such as peaches, peanuts and farm fresh eggs but also baked goods, jams and jellies, arts and crafts, flowers and plants.

Catch a show

Stepping inside the Rylander Theatre takes one’s breath away, with its three tiers of seating, massive stage and art deco mural inside the proscenium arch. The Rylander was built in 1921 and was once known as “The Finest Playhouse South of Atlanta.” Today, the theater offers a variety of performances, from ballet and plays to musical acts. The theater is also home to the

Frank Sheffield Memorial Organ, a 1928 restored Moller theater pipe organ that’s only one of three theater pipe organs in Georgia.

Ride the rails

Historic railcars of the SAM Shortline Excursion Train, otherwise known as the Savannah, Americus & Montgomery, have been beautifully restored and open for the public to ride the train’s original route from Cordele to Plains with a stop in Americus. Passengers enjoy the climate-controlled cars in a variety of styles as it journeys through Georgia Veterans State Park, across Lake Blackshear, through Americus and on to President Jimmy Carter’s hometown of Plains. Visitors may grab the train at the Americus Train Depot but to enjoy the full ride, it’s preferable to board in nearby Cordele. SAM routinely offers special excursions, such as the Murder Mystery Dinner Train, the Halloween Express and several holiday excursions.

National Parks

Americus is blessed to be situated between two national historic sites, part of America’s National Park Service. To the northeast is Andersonville National Historic Site, a Civil War prisoner of war camp where thousands of Union soldiers died and are buried in the park’s national cemetery. Andersonville’s known as the “deadliest ground of the American Civil War.” The park also includes the National Prisoner of War Museum dedicated to Americans captured from the Revolutionary War until today. Both sites are free to visitors.

The 49th annual Andersonville Encampment, where re-enactors perform mock Civil War battles and living history encampments, will be held the first weekend in October in the Village of Andersonville. Admission is free.

West of Americus lies the small town of Plains, home to former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. The Jimmy Carter National Historical Park pays homage to the 39th president and highlights his life, from growing up on a peanut farm in Plains to his humanitarian work throughout the world in his later years. The park sites—where admission is free—include Plains High School, where Carter attended and graduated; the Plains Depot, the site of his campaign headquarters during his 1976 presidential campaign; and Carter’s Boyhood Home and Farm, today home to honeybees, animals and crops, all part of an active farm. The Carter sites are free as well.

Take a hike

Looking out on Providence Canyon with its massive gullies as deep as 150 feet, visitors will be amazed to learn that this “Little Grand Canyon” in southwest Georgia was the result of poor farming practices in the 19th century. Visitors may hike along the rim or explore the colorful canyons of this state park located about 45 minutes west of Americus. Only backpackers can stay the night but accommodations are available at nearby Florence Marina State Park on Lake Walter F. George. Admission is a $5 parking fee.

Where to stay in Americus

What kid—and we’re talking all ages, here— wouldn’t want to spend the night in a castle? From the outside, the majestic Windsor Hotel appears just that, with its round towers boasting of roofs that resemble magician hats. Inside the 1892 Victorian, however, it’s an elegant landmark hotel with crystal chandeliers and marble floors. The recently renovated hotel features 53 guest rooms and three restaurants, Southern elegance at Rosemary & Thyme Restaurant, pub fare on the veranda at Floyd’s Pub, and a vibrant nightlife atmosphere at The Alley. You can even stay in one of the towers in a specialty suite such as the Carter Presidential Suite, named for President Jimmy Carter.

Discover the charm of the Americus Garden Inn Bed & Breakfast, a historic gem nestled in the residential historic district on picturesque Rees Park. Built in 1847, this award-winning inn offers seven spacious rooms, modern amenities, and a welcoming atmosphere that feels like home. Guests are treated to a delicious three-course breakfast each morning in the elegant dining room. Whether you’re seeking a tranquil escape or a memorable experience steeped in history, the Americus Garden Inn delivers a stay unlike any other.

From golf cart rides to submarine encounters, St. Marys waterfront has kid-friendly fun

ST. MARYS, GEORGIA–JANUARY 2025–St. Marys sits on Georgia’s southeastern shore as a welcoming respite for travelers looking for a family getaway. It is easy to get to, less than an hour’s drive north of Jacksonville, Florida, off I-95, and even easier to love. There is a fun, diverse downtown to explore. Two museums bring exciting local stories to life. And an array of outdoor activities mean fun for adventurers of all ages.

The historic downtown district is a scenic, walkable destination with plenty of activities for the whole family. The local shops are filled with unique gifts and fun souvenirs. From the variety of candies, ice cream and accessories at Market on the Square (100 Osborne Street, St. Marys, Georgia 31558; 912-882-2215) to the specialty card packs, Pokémon trading cards and game boxes at D-Vine Sports Cards & Collectibles (203 Osborne Street, St. Marys, Georgia 31558; 912-540-8700), this is shopping the kids will love.

Golf cart rentals make cruising around town a fun part of the visit. Carts are delivered right to a visitors’ location. For those who want to take to the trails, bicycle rentals are available, too, from Camden Bicycle Center (1929 Osborne Road, St. Marys, Georgia 31558; 912-576-9696).

St. Marys Waterfront Park (100 West St. Marys Street, St. Marys, Georgia 31558) is the perfect place to start and a fun location for daily adventures. The scene includes beautiful palm trees, birds soaring, fish jumping and a variety of boats plying the waters, and it changes every day. There are play and picnic areas, a pier and riverwalk, a fountain and plenty of pet-friendly space for family fun. A slate of seasonal events and festivals add to the reasons to visit.

Just across the street, the St. Marys Submarine Museum (102 St. Marys Street West, St. Marys, Georgia 31558; 912-882-2782) is jam-packed with exhibits and displays about the “silent service” that is still active in the waters here. The museum is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history and legacy of America’s submarine force. This is the largest museum of its kind in the South and is filled with photos, paintings, models, artifacts and rare historical documents. There’s even a real submarine periscope to view the beautiful St. Marys waterfront and beyond.

At the Cumberland Island National Seashore Museum (129 Osborne Street, St. Marys, Georgia 31558; 912-882-4336) guests learn stories of the island’s thousands of years of history. Artifacts and accounts from the eras of the American Indian, British explorers and enslaved people are on display. Of course, a day trip to Cumberland Island National Seashore is a popular family activity, too. After making reservations in advance, the trip starts at the waterfront Visitor Center (113 St. Marys Street, St. Marys, Georgia 31558; 912-882-4336). Then travelers board the ferry for a trip to the remote island where they can explore the miles of trails, beautiful beaches and historic sites on their own or reserve a spot on an afternoon walking tour or a day-long interpretive van tour.

Also popular for outdoor family fun is a trip to Crooked River State Park (6222 Charlie Smith Senior Highway, St. Marys, Georgia 31558; 912-882-5256). This 500-acre park has four hiking trails, three kayaking routes and picturesque fishing spots, along with a boat ramp, miniature golf and geocaching. Bike rentals are available, but paddlers and anglers should bring their own boats. A nature center features fish, snakes, turtles and other animals native to coastal Georgia. Visitors may venture to the nearby ruins of a tabby constructed sugar mill, built around 1825 and later used as a starch factory during the Civil War.

Back downtown, Marsh Mud Pottery Studio (815 Osborne St, St. Marys, Georgia 31558) is a favorite for indoor fun. Visitors can get creative painting a project of their choice from a wide variety of pottery pieces and glazes. Nearby, the local water park has fun for all ages. The St. Marys Aquatic Center (311 Herb Bauer Drive, St. Marys, Georgia 31558; 912-673-8118) has a thrilling water slide, a lazy river, a shallow-access pool with interactive playground and a lap pool. Parents can relax in shaded cabanas and all will enjoy the tasty treats from the park’s snack bar.

Where to stay

St. Marys is home to a host of independent lodging options, including a variety of vacation rentals with something for every family’s needs. Borne 605: A Vacation Rental Village (912-674-1432) has several family-friendly options, from one- to three-bedrooms. The three-bedroom Norris Cottage is located in historic downtown St. Marys with an easy walk to restaurants, shops and the ferry to Cumberland Island National Seashore.

At the historic Goodbread House Inn (209 Osborne Street, St. Marys, Georgia, 31558, 912-882-7490), the veranda overlooks downtown and you’re just steps away from the waterfront park, ferry dock and St. Marys River.

The campground and cottages at Crooked River State Park (6222 Charlie Smith Senior Highway, St. Marys, Georgia 31558; 912-882-5256) are also popular for those who enjoy a more rustic stay. Campsites are surrounded by palmettos and Spanish moss-draped oaks, while cottages are set near the tidal river.

THOROUGHBRED COUNTRY, SOUTH CAROLINA—JANUARY 2024—Located just east of Augusta, Georgia, and west of Columbia, South Carolina, is Thoroughbred Country, an area comprised of sprawling countryside, wide open greenspaces and endless opportunities to explore nature. Bordered by Interstates 20, 26 and 95, this region offers endless opportunities for family friendly fun.

Sometimes referred to as “Undiscovered South Carolina,” Thoroughbred Country consists of Aiken, Allendale, Bamberg and Barnwell counties. It’s no secret horses take the top prize in Thoroughbred Country but there’s so much more to discover in Thoroughbred Country beyond horses. From Civil War history and minor league baseball to drive-in movies and a drive-through safari, there’s no shortage of one-of-a-kind experiences for summertime getaways and fall excursions. Here are a few favorites families are sure to love:

Start your adventure by meeting a retired racehorse at Equine Rescue of Aiken. This non-profit organization exists to provide retired racehorses with a safe transition to a second career. Offering tours, volunteer opportunities, summer camps and an array of special programs, Equine Rescue of Aiken sits on over 80 acres of land and houses 50-60 horses at any given time. Departing from Bamberg County Boat Landing(s), South Fork Paddlers offers guided trips along the Edisto River May through October. Bring your own gear or rent everything you need from nearby Cope Kayak Company. Paddlers are in for a real treat. The South Fork of Edisto begins as a small stream in Johnston, South Carolina and flows for 105 miles southeast where it meets the North Fork near Branchville to form the Edisto River. Paddlers will wind their way through a beautiful stretch of Edisto’s forks. The blackwater river shaded by a lush tree canopy is narrow and winding and offers some of the most remote stretches of boating in the basin. South Fork Paddlers; 803-300-1972.

Discover South Carolina’s Civil War history by exploring the award-winning interpretive trail at Battle of Rivers Bridge State Historic Site. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this 390-acre historic site includes the Civil War Battlefield, memorial grounds and community building. See where science meets history in a blend of interactive exhibits as you explore the fascinating origins and ongoing missions of the site at the Savannah River Site Museum in downtown Aiken. Exhibits detail the time period in the community before the plant existed to the Cold War and beyond. Admission is free. 224 Laurens Street SW, Aiken, South Carolina, 29801; 803-648-1437

Take a walk on the wild side! Don’t miss Eudora Wildlife Safari Park, a drive-through safari experience where visitors can view, feed and even pet exotic animals.
